Now, I struggled to finish the book years ago as I found it sexist and wasn’t interested in Steve Harvey telling ME what to do in ANY of my relationships. So I was a cynic all day before the screening thinking it was going to be some simple foolery.
How wrong was I?! I LOVED the film? No. Really. I LUV-HED. The. Film?!
Starring Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, Jerry Ferrera, Meagan Good, Michael Ealy (YUM), Romany Malco, Terrance J. and Gary Owen, this was a romantic comedy home run.
I had never heard of “Katniss Everdeen” before the pop culture marketing machine cranked up for Hunger Games. Another young adult genre of best-selling book-turned-blockbuster-film was set for a spring release, but after skipping the Harry Potter craze (never seen a second of those Wizards- missmewiththat), and bored to tears by Bella & Jacob (UGH), I was honestly intrigued by HG previews. So, last Friday afternoon during an IMAX matinee, I treated myself to what everyone would surely be talking about all month long. GLAD I did.
After much public debate, reading the book, and even posting about my anxiety about the film, my LS and I braved Atlanta’s Midtown Arts Cinema over the weekend to view The Help, starring Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer. How a story about demeaning racist employment, Jim Crow’s human indecency, and ties of friendship in the midst of immense struggle can turn into a “feel-good” film, is beyond me. Several points throughout the film left me physically uncomfortable (to the point I considered leaving) and did not mimic the feel or outcome in the book.
Tuesday evening was the private tasting party at the new restaruant Smashburger, located on the North side!! My invitation to the unveiling came from friends at Tastemaker Magazine, and it’s safe to say Atlanta has another hit for the family oriented foodies! A clean, modern, spacious and delicious all-American burger joint with great customer service. *wink*
The menu boasts 100% Angus beef patties and tasty categories for making the ultimate custom Smashburger including bun options, a range of fresh toppings, and specialties. I was hesitant there’d be nothing for me on the menu (I’m pescetarian) but, *smile* they have fresh black bean burgers, salads, and even chicken! For the sweet tooth, hand-spun Häagen-Dazs milkshakes are on deck (the Oreo was my FAV), and kids will love the smaller-portioned meals packed with flavor.
Be sure to stop by once doors officially open, and bring the family to sit outside on the patio! Smashburger John’s Creek: 9775 Medlock Bridge Road Johns Creek, GA 30097
